Gasket paper

Post by Oldbarsteward »

Not so much as a joke as more of a funny Incident earlier today.
So in a nutshell I needed some gasket paper today so I went to my local halfords and asked the young lad if they have any, preferably 1mm.

He picked the phone up and after a short chat came back to me and said just this.. "nah mate but we've got some sandpaper that's bigger than 1mm".
I kid you not.

I got some now elsewhere now but it just made me chuckle on my way home.

Sometimes I do feel sorry for the young uns in Halfords.
They just have no idea.

I do too.
They should have a bit of training first.
I remember reading a book back in the late 70's just simply called 'the AA book of the car'.
What a lovely big ole boookk it was.
I learnt a lot from that.
I bet other guys can recall that one too.

Once in Halfords looking for some sparkplugs for my Suzuki. Asked a young guy who said " all our sparkplugs are for cars"
We don't do motorcycle ones

What's wrong with that reply? You wouldn't go into a bike shop and ask for a Mini's plug! Halfrauds don't stock a lot of 'odd' car bits either!

I agree.
I got a proper engine case gasket for my XT550 and it leaked.
One Rice Crispie knock out later and no leaks.

Well in the end I went a mile up the road to our local agricultural supplier/ tractor fixer type place.

Went in and see the bloke whom I know he told me they had some 1mm stuff that would have been great but I had to buy a 700mm by 2 mtr roll!

I then produced from my pocket the "fag box" sized gasket I needed to duplicate .

He vanished out the back workshop for a min a gave me a nice A4 sized bit for nothing.

Owzat for result.

Great news.

Things like that can happen in a lot of places.
Metal Supermarket has a minimum invoice of £7, so if you rummage in their scrap bin, and it is less that £7 worth, it is free :)
I usually give them £3-4 for something off the sarnie truck.
