I'd assume the black is an added earth / ground . . . . . although what it achieves in this type of sensor is beyond me!

I was thinking exactly the same thing :)

It says in the questions that if you have a two wire sensor, it should have the same two wire sensor replacement.
I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

If I can't find a 2 wire I'll try the 3 wire as they're not expensive..so...thank you..

Well hold on! If the manufacturer / supplier has changed from a two wire to a three wire - they are totally different sensor technologies - the former senses a ferrous metal and outputs a sine wave, variable AC voltage ranging from millivolts to volts based on speed of operation. The latter 3 wire is (usually) a 'Hall Effect' device which is fed a voltage supply usually either 5, 8 or 12v DC on one wire, one is an earth and the remaining is the sensor output - usually a square wave pattern ie the sensor will switch on - off in presence of a ferrous object. They aren't interchangable as wiring & sensor output is dedicated to each type.
