New dizzy fitted, 15 deg at idle, maxes out at 30. Almost perfect, but I would normally expect it to start advancing earlier.
The thing I don't like about this engine is the lack of vacuum - or at least lack of throttle response, its flatter than a flat thing. Are they all like this?

Hi MM if you have the SVDA dizzy according to Rob & Dave it should be set at 7.5 deg,s at idle, maybe at 15 thats giving you the flat spot. This is what i set Herman at and it pulls clean right from the bottom end with quite good torque. Hope this helps.

No, unlikely. More timing would improve response. It's not flat because of timing, it's unresponsive nomatter where the timing is.

Is the new carb got the right jets in it?

No I doubt it, the air scew ia a long way out, and could do with being further out methinks. The plan is to put a wideband lambda in the exhaust.

Most carbs I have worked on have the air screw out one and half turns to one and three quarters. If to far out it will run weak.

Yes, but that assumes an original carb. This is a new solex copy, and setting idle mixture is as simple as adjusting and watching idle speed - faster = closer to ideal?
So, it looks like I'll have to get intothe carb at some point. On hols at the moment.

My ten Pennerth! That Solex "copy" is screaming at me! Those chinese or whatever ones are horrid! The machining and tolerances in them is known to be awful with air leaks and the like, it sounds to me that the vacuum might have a leak somewhere? And with the air screw wound out so far also says the jetting is wrong!
Have a look at this, Rob and Daves air cooled pages are a mine of info for VW air cooled problem solving.
