Bike engine trike oiling

Post by Tadpole »

Just wondering, do bike engine trikes suffer from oiling problems? What I mean is bikes are designed to lean in corners, if the engine stays flat does all the oil get thrown away from the oil pick up? So it starts gulping air? Is this something that needs to be considered when building?

Think extreme..... F1 / TT sidecar engines 13-14K rpm's and flat cornering - no probs!

It is possible to starve a bike engined trike of oil but you have to ride it like an absolute hooligan, my son did it on his Honda nighthawk trike, as for the race/competion engines, a lot are equiped with modified, baffled or dry sumps. After saying that, normal riding, or even semi hooligan riding will not present any problems, just keep it topped up.

I was thinking along the lines of stunt bikes. They move their oil pickups because they expect to be spending time with the oil in the wrong place. But I guess that's more for prolonged periods on the back wheel

I've got a bike engined trike, XVS1100A, never had any problems with oiling. Look forward to seeing yours. Bob.
