Hi Geno, check out Rob and Daves air cooled VW pages, everything you will need for the engine and trans on your trike. They suggest 217 lbs/ft.

Fer real? That's equal to using an 8 foot breaker bar with nearly 30lbs hanging on the end! My windy gun doesn't go that high LOL! I don't know but would imagine 80 - 100lbs is about right especially as it will have a cotter pin to prevent backing out?

Mal is right,vw workshop manuals state 217 lbs to loose & it will damage the splines, saying that though it does say if the cotter pin hole doesn't line up you can come of a bit.

Most VW owners have access to a large scaffolding pole.

That is my thoughts, but I can get to pin hole without going anywhere that tight.

Wonder if it is a VW back end after all?

The BMW E39 rear axle nut is similar in that it should be done up to 300NM or 220ft-lbs.

In the link if you (are interested) scroll down about 2/3rd and you will see a reference to how it is done on a Volvo by tightening the nut to 120Nm or ~89ft-lbs and then turn the nut a certain number of degrees.
