Therostat to replace on mini 1275

Never changed a therostat on a car engine any tips

Drain down enough coolant to below thermostat housing, un-bolt 3No. nuts ( if I remember it has 3 studs.) Soft blow hammer to break seal to gasket, remove housing, replace stat, reverse above - ALWAYS USE NEW GASKET! Refill with coolant.

Got a week off work end of month so will order the parts

I would do a flush of the whole system as crud builds up in some areas. Remove the thermostat and stick a hose in the engine block, just flush with water for around 10 mins or until all is clear. The water should come out of the rad hose, or remove the rad and flush that out on the ground.

When we did engine overhauls at work we had the block and head boiled to get the crud out. It builds up around the cylinder areas and cuts down on the cooling flow so that no 4 cylinder will overheat because of loss of flow. No 1 cylinder near the water pump was normally ok.

chuck in a bottle of flush, let the engine get up to temp, let it cool, drain it, old thermostat out, new one in, refill it with a mix of antifreeze and water, make sure to bleed the air out. job done.
