CVO Exhausts keep coming loose

Post by RickA »

My wife & I have been bikers (2 wheels) for 50 years now but due to joint problems we turned to 3 wheels September last year (2021) and bought a new CVO tri glide. We love it.

There is a problem, though, the exhaust pipes work loose from the main junction under the trike. I have been back to the dealer and they tighten them up and they work loose every 1000 miles or so... It appears that Harley Davidson now use a silicon type gasket to join the silencer to pipe and this works loose. They changed from a metal gasket due to is fusing the silencer to the pipe and needing to bu cut off for a silencer change.

Our dealer has contacted HD UK but have not had any response, I guess they don't care too much.

We went on holiday to Americe this last September (2022) and visited a massive HD dealership, they also have the same issue with the exhaust and they have not had any responne from HD USA either!!!

Has any one else had this problem or can suggest a way to perminantly fix the problem, please?

Honda are the only OEM that still use those that I know of, metalisic/asbestos/graphite type ring seals - maybe something could be made to fit & use silicone to gap fill?

I would suggest you join the HDF forum and then ask your question in the tri glide section -

My bike uses the metal gaskets in the muffler to connect to the headers. It has the same part number for the part used on your exhaust's crossover pipe assembly. I have had them off 3 or 4 times and there is nothing wrong with them.

The clamps are a single use and stretch. If they have not been torqued up correctly the first time it is no good keep playing with the same ones, in my opinion. Get new clamps and find the spec for torque. As an example on my bike the clamps are done up to 40 ft-lbs.

Had a a VRod once upon a time and swapped my clamps out for heavy duty hose clamps.
They are much sturdier.

That could be a solution.

When I changed out the mufflers on my bike and not being a specialist I used a torque wrench. Where I would have stopped without a torque wrench I still had quite a long way to go to reach the required torque.
