As anyone built a chain drive diff. Would be interested to hear details and how it performed.

Have a look at what Casarva do.
Basically they take the planet gears and where the crown gear bolts on is where the sprocket bolts on in its place. They make their own housing to enclose it all.
I have one that is belt driven on the Sportster conversion I did.
