Never bid until the last few seconds.
Bidding before gives someone else time to bid, so you end up bidding against yourself and bidding it up.
Use something like Gixen (https://www.gixen.com/) to bid for you.
Just make sure you put the maximum you would be willing to bid.
I know too many people who complain they were outbid, and the snipe did not work. Never the fact that they were outbid 'cos someone was willing to pay more
