Hi all
Hoping to pick your brains and get a little help.
I have a Yamaha XVS1100 Dragstar with Mk II Escort rear axle with drum brakes.
Problem is since I bought the trike rear braking has been almost non existant so me and a pal set about it with new shoes. To be honest didn't seem much wrong with the old ones but replaced anyway. Cutting to the chase no resistance to pedal apart from the return spring tension and bled several times still same and no apparent leaks. Have replaced reservoir front pipe- master cylinder-pipe from master cyl to 3 way splitter - 3 way splitter and both blead nipples. Still no leaks but still no brakes (obviously handbrake works). We have bled manually and using vacuum system and pumped no end of fluid through but still no brakes at all. Master cylinder is the Yamaha standard one. It is a 20 year old conversion by Wacky Trikes so can only assume the brakes must have worked else it wouldn't have got through MOT's over the years.
Please can anybody help or suggest somewhere I can take trike to be looked at. I live in Chesterfield Derbyshire.
Thanks in advance for any help. PS it is rideable front brake is fine.
Cheers Chris (Fatharry)

Re: Rear brake problems
Hi Harry, you may have air bubbles stuck in the wheel cylinders. Try pushing the pistons right back into the cylinder and if poss clamp them in with carpenters clamps. then bleed the system again. Without seeing it obviously i cant tell but its worth a try. Good luck.

Re: Rear brake problems
Hi Chris, I've got a Yam 1100 Dragstar classic with rear drum brakes but Reliant not ford like yours. Mine also runs the original bike master cylinder & I've got great braking. Could be the master cylinder needs a rebuild kit, about £40 from ebay or any Yam dealer. Could also be knackered wheel cylinders, again worth replacing as cheap enough. When I first got mine back braking was pretty non existent but a rebuild kit, new braided steel brake lines & new wheel cylinders sorted it out. Hope this helps mate & good luck! Bob.
Some mornings it's just not worth chewing through the restraints!

Thanks I'll try this as the wheel cylinders apart from the copper piping are the only things not changed. Thanks for help. Re: Rear brake problems
AAAHHH the dreaded trike rear brakes problem raises it's head once again....it sounds likely it's wheel cylinders or master cylinder.
The older i get the earlier it seems to get late.

Re: Rear brake problems
Don't disagree with diagnosis but I believe a lot stems from the small bike master, its designed to move enough fluid for one piston, now it's asked to move twice the volume which will give a long pedal / not much force so ANY air in the system has a big effect on available effort.
