New winter project

Post by firebob22 »

Hi all, now that Tina's trike's finished & mine's been on the road for a few years, i've decided to do another conversion just to keep me sane over the long cold days that are coming. I've sorted out a pretty good Yamaha XJ900 Diversion, just something different from cruisers, & it should be here sometime this week.
Now here's a question! We all know that Reliant axles are what everyone uses, but are there any other car axles that could be used? Surely someone must have used something else at some point. Not that i'm looking for one but just curious.
Thankfully i've got loads of parts left over from the last two builds to save a bit of cash but i'm in no rush to finish this one & when it's done i'll sell it on.
I'll post some pics as & when & let you know how it's going.
Take care all, Bob.

Any live axle could be used subject to some work but the diff choice availability is usually the issue - most car gearboxes output 1:1 in top gear or lower in 5th so can cope with diff ratio's that are too low for bike outputs hence why everyone wants the 2.78 ratio Reliant axle. UK source Ford axles are bullet proof for trike use with some having 3.34 or 3.09 but the demand is high for these in motorsport.

If the conversions you have done have all been solid axles how about an IRS setup?

Hi all & thanks for the replies. I now understand the thinking behind Reliant stuff (cheers Kawazuki). I'll have a shufty round at Beemer parts & as to IRS Andy, budget doesn't allow for one, much as i'd like to do one.
I'll keep looking & let you all know what's happening.
Once again cheers guys. Bob.

Bob you can get a whole rear axle with the subframe for a BMW from a breakers yard.

You don't need to use the shocks, just motorbike ones

Hi guys & thanks for the beemer info. I like the look of them but another consideration i've got is rear width 'cos of restricted side access to my workshop. I think i'll go with Reliant because i've done a couple of them & they're fairly straight forward.
Cheers for the offer Old git! yeah that sounds like a plan. What have you got & what would you like for one of them?
Please let me know as i'll hopefully start the build in the next couple of weeks.
All the best, Bob.
