Small steps . . .

Post by Doc. »

Levvin, Doc and anyone else....I'm in total agreement with you 'ref bike stuff.

Please feel free to start a thread in the "Customising" part of the forum (It doesn't get overly used) and fill us in with what your doing.
Just few little 'snippets' at the moment, I'm just getting little bits made as and when I have the time/materials . . .

First up is my little Welder Trolley.
Image
Image
My old MIG on top, and Stumpie's (ex)TIG on the bottom.
There's a wooden drawer under the top shelf with all my spare bits and bobs in.

Then there's the Blasting Pot and Cabinet I made a couple of months ago . . .
Image
Just an old Propane bottle, with copper plumbing fittings and pipe.
Dead simple, but works really well.

Image
Cabinet is made from an old steel locker I 'rescued', and a glass door (for the 'lid') from an abandoned drinks cooler.
Things that there's just no excuse for fitting on a Trike;
'Dodgy' registration,
Telescopic Forks.
Bike Tyres on the rear.
Car seats
Anything in the shape of a knuckle-duster,
Maltese Cross, flame, chain or Skull.
Alloy tread/chequer plate.

This is the Radius turning tool I made yesterday, planning to make up some roller dies, once I know what size tubing I'll be using mostly . . .
Image
Most of the parts.

Assembled and mounted on my Lathe cross-slide . . .
Image
Fibre-lined spherical bearings top and bottom, cut-down 10mm boring bar for the cutter, locked with a 5mm grub-screw either side.

I also knocked up live-drive centre(?), for holding and driving large diameter parts on the lathe without having the end in the chuck, makes it possible to machine the full length in one hit, and keeps the tools away from the chuck when turning close to the end. . .
Image
Fairly normal practice for wood turning, but I've not seen it done with Metal before (spent ages searching for a ready-made one on the 'net!).

Lastly, for now, my NC30 (VFR400R) that I'm rebuilding.
Turned it into a track-bike yonks ago, but in the end I couldn't afford all the travelling and track fees!
Image
Aprilia RS125 seat unit just resting in place, could have been made for it, it fits so closely :niceone:
Think it suits it nicely too, the original is just a bit too 'box-like' for me, only thing that really dates the Bike.
Will be making a subframe for it soon-ish.

Got a grubby (surface corrosion and flaky paint) rear wheel from a VFR750 today to go on it, it's a fairly common mod, as the original is an 18-incher, which restricts the tyre choice too much.
The later NC35 has a 17" rear, but second-hand ones are as rare as rocking-horse s**t, and very pricey.
Have started machining the hub to suit.

It's got ZXR400R USD forks on it, they pretty-much go straight in, but I had to machine up an 'extension cup' that fits in the top of the head-stock, to raise the top bearing, and make adaptor plates for the Calipers.

That's it for the moment, will post more as it happens . . .

My pleasure :niceone:
Hopefully it won't be too long between 'instalments'.

I do tend to have a few different jobs 'on-the-go' at any one time, so there should be stuff to post often enough.

I'm hoping to start the build of my hydraulic press/bender/roller (still haven't decided yet) soon, so that'll be up as well.
Just gathering the metal for it at the moment.

Then there's the Welding table I want to make.

Bit of plastering and painting to finish in the house, finish my youngest daughters bedroom, gutters to fix, leaky conservatory roof to sort, fix the dishwasher, weld the floor of my eldest Daughter's '71 Beetle (and whip the engine out for a quick 'going-over' no doubt), and what with C*******s looming . . .:diggin:
