Newbe here

Post by Tom1 »

cant find the newbe page guys, but have a 1978 xs 1100 and a massive headache to match,
been at it for around seven months now, and the starter is now spinning freely with the occasional splutter but not engaging, and before I get any replies let me explain,
engine out frame reworked and painted engine painted and plugged in spluttery but running,
NOW.. renewed: selinoid, starter, coils, battery earth leads positive battery leads, auto spark rewired with difficulty but got there in the end all electrics working,
Again started and running kinda spluttery, carbs stripped and cleaned, adjusted to run a bit rich but running all the same,

now the starter is just spinning with the odd huff and puff but still only spinning, stripped the starter and cleaned, also tried another starter, same deal just spinning, checked all gear cogs and starter clutch for damage there is none,
dropped the fresh oil and replaced with mineral wet clutch oil, still only spinning ! Just about to give up and take a 9 inch grinder to it! not mechanical and definately not electricly minded, so please don't hit me with ohms and stuff as i thought they were for people that meditate,
feeling totally useless atm

If the starter is spinning reliably, there is only one component between it and the crankshaft and that is the starter clutch. I've no experience with Yamaha SC's just Suzuki but its not unheard of for them to 'look' fine but not work either failing to engage or to slip and not crank. Suzuki's like to either break their mounting bolts or spin the SC off its threads after a backfire or similar! A secondhand complete & known working SC is likely a rarity these days - a complete engine may be the best option ! ! !

Yeah can get spares just trying to sus the problem first, the engine starts and runs so maybe the starter clutch better that than an engine replacement
Thnx

Well, if you can get good spares, you're golden! Easy check when fitted, the SC can / will only rotate in one direction using a hand to turn it - any other outcome its FUBAR'd !

FUBAR'd !!
Think i found my problem (not sure) BUT... stripped out the clutch basket, on the brass ring there are marks/imprint of the black clutch rings like they have been stuck together 1/3rd of the ring and on closer inspection 3-4 of the other rings are badly scored across the face on the tabs (assuming this was the rumbling broken bottle sound), small scores here and there on the face of the basket,
Hopefully thats all that has been causing it, newish second hand basket clutch assembly coming Tuesday, if it works out i'll give an update, just a bit of a pain when your only exerience is google/youtube and a socket set, but the glass is half full of great expectations of a running trike
