All good fun innit, why keep stuff to yourself when you can share it.:)

Kickdown cable....It lives on a little jockey wheel that's attached to a cam that goes in the valve block. Take all the tension out of the cable, turn the jockey wheel and cam so you can remove the cable from it then get rid of the old one.

Reverse the proceedings to fit the new one.....It should be the law that you have to have one fitted. :)

Not a problem for you Rik, as you will know exactly how much is enough, but a 'novice' builder could easily over-do it with the RTV (or any other 'liquid gasket'), and inadvertently block an oilway/pipe with excess sealant that get's squeezed out inside where it can't be seen!
Things that there's just no excuse for fitting on a Trike;
'Dodgy' registration,
Telescopic Forks.
Bike Tyres on the rear.
Car seats
Anything in the shape of a knuckle-duster,
Maltese Cross, flame, chain or Skull.
Alloy tread/chequer plate.

Point taken Doc.

Surprisingly though I've seen people use too little as well. Just to clear this up then, you need to use just enough RTV so that when the mating faces are bolted together and torqued up, the RTV just squeezes out of the "gap"....no more, no less. :)

Inlet manifold, its a horrible job. The last one I did had sharp edges and was like wrestling with a giant razorblade!
That black Wynns silicone is a good tip, most likely better than the clear acid-cure bathroom silicone I use (the clear stuff is excellent on exhausts though because its heatproof enough for the manifold/head joint when fully cured)

So that's the filter and sandwich plate bolted back onto the oil pump. Next thing is to prime the oil system. This isn't the best of pictures but I hope you follow what's going on.

The oil pump drive shaft has a tongue sticking out of the top of it, so get a piece of alloy tube, stick it in the vice and crimp the end so it fits over the tongue. Put the other end in a drill and after removing one of the rocker shaft bolts, with the drill going clockwise, slowly prime the system until oil flows from the rocker bolt hole.

Now time to re-fit the dissy and leads.

With the tongue on the pump drive at the ten to the hour position, slide the dissy back in the timing chest so that it's base is flush with the chest. It should slot straight in....if it doesn't, give the rotor arm a little wiggle as it's going in.

You should end up with this....Vacuum unit pointed to the front, rotor arm pointing to number one lead on the dissy cap.

Image

Now you know exactly where number one is, re-connect all the rest of the leads. To help you, Rover has kindly cast the firing order in the inlet manifold by the thermostat housing, and the cylinder numbers are cast into the manifold tracts...easy eh.

Image

Exhausts now. All the gaskets are annoyingly "handed". So before you fit anything, line up the gaskets the way they are meant to fit. You would be amazed how many people miss this bit.

Time to fire it up...does it run like a bag of spanners, probably, this is due to the vagaries of Rover ignition timing. If you set the timing correctly at TDC, with the engine running, gently turn the dissy anti clockwise to advance the timing until you achieve smooth running. This can be as much as twenty degrees !!! Once the lumps running smoothly, advance the timing again by up to ten degrees...you'll know when you've gone too far as it will start to get fluffy and misfire.

To do all of this properly you should use a strobe light and/or all sort of other gizmo's, like a dwell meter if your still running a point's system. Unless when you did the rebuild you used a DTI to find correct TDC and altered the movable timing blade on the front cover to suit....your going to be chasing ghosts.

Carbs then.....Disconnect the throttle linkage that joins the carbs together, then using your trusty very old SU vacuum reader. Adjust the carbs so they are both sucking the same amount of air. Re-connect the linkage.

Mixture time now. The base setting for the carbs is mixture screw fully in, then two and a half turns out. From this setting turn BOTH mixture screws the exact same amount, either in to richen things up, or out to weaken it. You should after doing all this correctly have a super smooth tick over, and a nice fast pick up. How you set this up is up to you....I like to run mine on the rich side of things to keep things nice and cool...oh, and powerful.

All this stuff takes experience, don't be afraid though, It's all simple to undo if you make a wrong adjustment.

These are the mixture screw...no really, they are. Rubbish picture alert.

Rubbish phone video of the thing running once you've got everything set up "just so"......

That's it, job done.....Hope this helps someone sometime down the line. :)
