Hi,

Lots of choices for the old air cooled beetle engine. If it is in good shape I would look to use a good 10w-40 semi synthetic with regular changes. Loads to choose from here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40.aspx

If it is one that uses plenty of oil, look to use a 15w-50.

howdedo guy can you recomend an oil for a 1993 suzuki vs800 intruder v twin 15000 miles 80 mph max speed,just in the process of fitting an heavy duty clutch,i put a new oem clutch in last january and it started slipping in november,the oil used with that clutch was petronas syntium 4sx 10w 40,

With respect to oilman , unless a VW beetle engine has the oil filter mod then I was told and read a semi or synthetic is a bad choice as it's designed to hold sh!t in the oil and let the filter do it's work , with the stock strainer these oils are no good ..

Sorry, I thought Beetles came with a filter, I guess a fair few have had the filter modification.

Without a filter, you want a non-detergent oil if it's not been rebuilt or had a filter fitted. It's not whether the oil is synthetic or mineral (although those are kind of linked to detergency - most synthetics will contain detergents), but if the oil contains detergents as they are what hold muck in suspension. If the engine has been rebuilt and is fairly clean, using a detergent oil is fine as there shouldn't be much muck there and it will mean that the engine is nice and clean when the oil is dropped out. If the engine has never been rebuilt, the chances are there is a fair bit of muck in the system and you don't want to disturb that with a detergent oil.

If you want to stick with a 'normal' choice for it, the Castrol EP 80w is a good option.
