You should find something in your price range, just beware that if it is older, you need to check that engine over, look for oil smoke, death rattles etc. if possible drag an expert allong with you....

VW trike, car engined trikes
The good thing with VW Engines is, although they're initially fairly pricey to buy as a running 'lump', they're still reasonably cheap to rebuild to a decent standard.

Great fun, easy to work on and very reliable.
Judging on a previous post, in this thread, you will get about the same mpg too

I know this is an old post but picked up my 1500 vw engine trike a year or so ago for a shade over 3k, ended up swearing a bit and asking a mate for help to get it running right but a couple of hundred quid later and she is amazing.
