Re: What have you done to your Trike today... (2023)
Finally got Misty Blue sorted with recon Borg Warner type 35 gearbox fitted. Been a bit of a slog. Old gearbox was causing me too many leak problems - like ‘whack a mole’ - sort one, then another shows. I wasn’t convinced Marc Geraghty had used correct mineral oil in the box when it was mated to my recon V8 a few years back. Wrong oil can wreck the gearbox, plus he’d disconnected the kickdown cable - saying it was indriveable when connected - backend spun round at merest hint of throttle opening. I have run it in that condition until too many leaks (500 ml top up required in g’box before I could take it out!).
Hence I decided sod it - recon g’box it is. This was fitted @ a month back. 6 mile spin. Yet another leak showed up - this time from the bellhousing area & an alarming shudder developed half way through drive. Stripped out - seals ok on g’box - mechanics had chat with g’box supplier - likely culprit the torque converter worn.
Suitable torque converter finally sourced with some difficulty.
When you read up on the Rover P5 & P6 forums, seems this type of work is not without its quirks & problems. Recommended if gearbox replaced, torque converter should be replaced too. Pity I didn’t clock this then. Otherwise, failure is likely to happen - as appears to be the case for the torque converter.
New torque converter fitted yesterday to my recon BW35 g’box & kickdown cable fitted & adjusted correctly. Test ride - behaves perfectly with excellent auto gear changes - no clunkiness as with previous box. No oil leaks.
Mechanics I use are 2 local south Manchester mobile guys who I spotted on FB as being highly recommended & when you check out their work portfolio, you name it - they’ve dealt with it & I’ve used them for odd bits on trike, my Porsche Cayenne, wifes RAV4. They are very obliging guys who will tackle virtually anything at your house. If you are in the Greater Manchester area (they do travel beyond) & you are struggling to get a trike or car or van / truck sorted - they are worth a look. Didn't realise you had been having issues.
Glad they are sorted.

Had a bit of a blowout over the weekend.
Now time to start repair, took out hang brake and main brake pipes so a bit of work to do.
